“Unthinking people said Mr. Treves ought to write his memoirs. Mr. Treves knew better. He knew that he knew too much.”
I decided to dip my toe in the proverbial waters and read Agatha Christie for the first time.
True to the promise of the story, and its blurb, this is not simply about a murder, and the whodunit that comes as part of a typical mystery in solving such a case, but in understanding how various characters came to be where they were, putting them in position to be a witness, a suspect, an alibi, or an innocent bystander who knew too much — a crime for which the ultimate price must be paid.
Overall, I really enjoyed the mystery, for a while it was as much a question of who would die as why and whodunit. The language, while not feeling perfectly contemporary is, for the most part (over 90%) easy to read, understand and relate to. A few expressions are used that are particularly British, and a few are of the time, but nothing that slows down the reading experience or makes the story hard to understand for any reason.
