“…males want to challenge us and females fear us…”
This collection of three stories falls somewhere between ‘the bigger they are the harder they fall’, ‘don’t judge a cyborg by his parts’ and ‘each of us is more than our past’ nor our we defined by our pasts, particularly the parts of it we didn’t choose, or didn’t go anything like we would have expected.
Lathim rescues Maggie from pirates, and she’s grateful, but not blindly so — and Jillian may be rescued at the same time, but she reacts in a way that is entirely her own — and leaves the cyborg who wants nothing more than to make her happy entirely perplexed.
Wrylack is a medic who stands apart from his peers in his unique, highly visible, augmentations — and he is determined to protect, and keep the woman he is given by aliens neither of them wants anything to do with… but he’s about to discover that she has a mind of her own, and she has experienced even more than he imagined before they met.
Tark has never before met a woman who didn’t fear him, but Suki not only accepts him, she chooses him… and he wonders if he can stand by while she takes all the risks she’s willing to accept as part of freedom, all while he fears she may want to choose someone else when she realizes she settled for the first Cyborg she met.
I love that the men have as many insecurities as the women, and are faced with the reality they overlooked some facts the women consider obvious, and never considered some possibilities the women present as well worth considering – they are flawed in believable and relatable ways, all while being willing to listen to these newcomers, and consider their words.
I was gifted with a copy of Cy-Con and chose to share my thoughts.
